My Type of Reading

There are three main ways to read story.

  1. Physical book
  2. Ebook (Kindle, Nook, Apple Books, Libby, etc.)
  3. Audiobook

There is a lot of controversy around whether listening to an audiobook counts as reading. I am of the yes, it counts. It doesn’t matter how you get the story, only that you get it. For example, if you listen to Animal Farm, you still are gaining the knowledge of a classic story. It is not the method of delivery that matters to the writer. It is the knowledge obtained.

With that being said, I am most definitely a physical book/ebook reader.

It was not always this way. Before I had kids, I loved listening to audiobook. I especially enjoyed them while I sewed. I could work on a project while still being entertained by a story.

Now, after having kids, I find that my brain doesn’t work the same way. There is always something I am thinking about or planning, thus I find it hard to focus on a story if I am not actively engaged with it. In other words, if the writing is not in front of me, I find it difficult to keep things straight. I will have to frequently go back and re-listen to parts of the story. Even then, I don’t always keep thing straight.

I also enjoy learning new words. When I can read a new word, it enriches my brain. To me, it feels like constantly learning and it is stimulating to my brain.

Lastly, I also find joy in sitting down quietly and reading. If I am listening to an audiobook, I am usually doing something else and not relaxed. Reading text is a way for me to do that. I especially enjoy reading before bed as a way to relax.

But whether you are a physical/ebook reader or audiobook listener, you are still getting the story that the author intended. It all counts towards those book list goals.
